Math

The mathematics curriculum offers three paths to meet the diverse needs of students.

AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics present the highest challenges in math study. These courses are designed to prepare students to take the AP exam. Students who score well enough on the AP exam may receive college credit for these courses.
The honors path presents a very high level of challenge in both logic and computational skills. This path is designed to prepare students to be eligible for AP courses. Students electing honors work should be prepared for academic rigor and vigorous time demands.
The academic path presents a high level of challenge to proficient students. Motivated students with sound achievement and post-secondary goals should not hesitate to enter this path.
The integrated path is designed to support motivated students who have difficulty in math.

Performance standards in math align with the Keystone Exam in Algebra 1, which indicates proficiency in these skills. The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in the subject areas of Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Literature, English Composition, Biology, Chemistry, U.S. History, World History, and Civics and Government.

The Keystone Exams are one component of Pennsylvania’s new system of high school graduation requirements. Keystone Exams will help school districts guide students toward meeting state standards.

Students who do not perform to the proficient level need remediation to meet course standards. The Math Department supports students in reaching proficiency through 5th Block interventions and the Intervention Math course. The Pennsylvania General Performance Level Descriptors correlate to a four-point scale as follows:

4 Advanced: In-depth understanding and exemplary display of skills.
3 Proficient: A solid understanding and adequate display of skills.
2 Basic: Partial understanding and limited display of skills.
1 Below Basic: Little understanding and minimal display of skills.

This four point scale translates to your Algebra 1 Keystone Exam score as follows:

4 Advanced: 1546-1800
3 Proficient: 1500-1545
2 Basic: 1439-1499
1 Below Basic: 1200-1438

Four credits are now required for all SAHS students in Mathematics.
