Description:

This course explores one theme each year in an interdisciplinary format in accordance with the Academic Decathlon program. Past themes have included Africa, World War II, and the French Revolution. Students will explore art, economics, literature, music, science, and social science in conjunction with the annual theme.

 

The course will include novel and short story discussion, economics exercises, art and music analysis of specific pieces, the study of historical context of art, music, and literature as it pertains to the theme, and scientific explorations. Assignments include short papers and essays, classroom presentations, quizzes, laboratory work, Socratic discussions of literature, art, and music, and others. A year-end presentation/project that is interdisciplinary in nature would be included, with an emphasis on freedom of expression (artists could make a piece of art, etc.)

 

Note: This course involves a very large amount of independent reading and study.

 

Enrollment in the Honors Seminar is not necessary for participation in the competitive Academic Decathlon team, nor are students who enroll in Honors Seminar expected to compete in the Academic Decathlon program.
