Description: This course is a survey of American literature and philosophy beginning with the mid 1800s and ending in the mid 1900s. Emphasis is placed on reading literature in its historical context as well as recognizing social and political issues that affect the creation of literature as an artifact. Analytic reading, informative, persuasive, and narrative composition skills are refined since students qualifying for this course are expected to be advanced readers and writers. Grammar and vocabulary study stems from student and professional writing. Independent research projects are required as well as independent outside readings. Students are frequently asked to speak before the class and to work in collaborative groups. Integrated technology allows students to work individually as well as in groups on oral and written assignments. |
