Description:
In this course the student can expect an in-depth scientific study of a wide variety of environmental problems existing in our society today. The approach is based on the environmental science model of first understanding the scientific components of the ecosystem through research and field testing, then exploring the impacts of an environmental problem on both the environment and society. Topics will include water and water resources, air and air pollution, energy research and development, land use practices, and biodiversity. Other timely issues will be selected based on student interest and their relation to the development of the basic understanding of environmental concepts and principles. Due to the nature of this course, supplemental readings will be required. It is felt that students taking this course will have a serious interest in the environment and a working knowledge in the sciences. Extensive field studies are a part of this course.
