Food Services > Healthy Changes in our School Cafeterias
The Souderton Area School District Food Service Department is proud to serve the students well-balanced breakfast and lunches. By providing a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat, low sodium entrees, and a wide variety of nutritious snacks, beverages, and water, we meet all the federal and state guidelines for the nutritional needs of our students. The Food Service Department plans each meal to meet one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Conscious of the importance of decreasing fat, sugar and salt in school lunches and implementing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, more local fresh fruits, vegetables, and high fiber foods have been included in the daily food choices.
We would like to encourage you to have your child join us for BOTH BREAKFAST and LUNCH every day in the building your child attends. Our Food Service staff is available to assist your child with any selections for the meal.
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in School Year 2012-2013, school breakfast and lunch will meet additional standards requiring:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
- Larger serving of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable)
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat-free Chocolate, Strawberry, White or 1% milk
- More whole grains
- And less sodium
We are always working to offer Souderton Area School District students healthier and tastier choices. We purchase some season locally grown produce for our students. We will continue to offer the students a wide variety of items to choose from in each meal category and encourage them to try the new offers we have made available.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion has provided educational materials on their Web site titled "ChooseMyPlate.gov". Please see the following links on our District Web site to learn more about
